Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System Project

City of Joburg: Rea Vaya

Traffic Management Technologies was appointed to Design, Build, Operate and Maintain the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System for 12 years for the City of Joburg.

This Project is operational and includes the supply, installation and maintenance of the following systems:

  • Validators that support all major fare media and technologies, such as Near Field Communication (NFC) MiFare, Contactless Smart Card (CSC), Europay MasterCard Visa (EMV) and QR Code (Barcode) with strict adherence to industry required certifications and standards. These units also include GPS systems for fleet monitoring and improvement;
  • 62 Stations;
  • 384 Station Gate Validators;
  • 392 On Bus Validators, Automotive computers, Turnstile equipment and position systems;
  • A retail network to allow commuters to purchase tickets conveniently from virtually any location. Integration with leading banks for point-of-sale (POS) solutions with 62 Point of sale devices and auxiliary sales equipment such as thermal printers and cash drawers, running on our MobiGuider software;
  • An efficient AFC back office (MobiGuider), operational in many countries for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) solutions, especially in Europe, Africa and the United States. A system which allows of open or closed-loop systems and solution for the ever-growing smart ticketing market.

Our operational services include:

  • Preventative and corrective maintenance on all connected devices on a continued, scheduled basis;
  • Live monitoring of validators, station gates, ticket office machines, workstations and servers to support technical operations and Service Level Agreements;
  • Continuous Improvement by monitoring and updating Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Providing the City of Joburg with the required training and refresher training to keep the workforce proficient in the daily operations of the system;
  • Comprehensive stock monitoring systems for field deployment, repair, and audits which provides real-time information on the location, status and health of devices.

MobiGuider Software

This is the core of the AFC system and is an internationally deployed and preferred AFC System in multiple international BRT and Mass Transit Systems (MRT) and ensures the best standard management of the entire transactional process for fare and passenger transactional information collection, secure transmission, recording and processing.

MobiGuider is the controlling software managing all AFC services in both the Front Office and Back Office environments and securing and managing the actual field device hardware.

The system hardware, such as passenger facing validation equipment (validators), boasts ‘built for purpose’ manufacturing standards, specifically for buses and other mobile environments and can withstand the harsh operating environment of bus and other MRT systems, such as vibration, temperature extremes, varying voltage power supply, as well as public use. In addition, the equipment has a high throughput ability, consistently achieving arguably unrivalled reliability, accuracy, and longevity.

Any financial system demands the highest standards of financial and banking compliance and accuracy and performance consistency in its primary function of fare collection. System availability is thus a critical dimension of performance, and TMT provides comprehensive complementary and essential services in terms of preventative and reactive maintenance, high availability, backup and system restoration and general system management.

TMT’s business values and service proposition ensures critical system availability, performance, and an ability to deliver client-focused bespoke solutions. This makes our system more than capable of processing and exceeding Rea Vaya’s daily transactional requirements of over 72 000 average passenger transactions per day and revenue collection exceeding R150 million per year.
